Lyndon John Farnham
Born: St Helier, Jersey, 1964
About me
I was born and raised in Jersey, and the Island has always been my home. I have spent much of my working life in business, public service and community activities, and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to represent Islanders in the States Assembly for over 20 years.
I am currently serving my second term as Chief Minister of Jersey, having first been elected to the role in January 2024 and re-elected in June 2026 following the General Election.
Since becoming Chief Minister, my priorities have included strengthening Jersey’s economy, maintaining sound public finances, assisting Islanders with cost-of-living pressures, improving public sector efficiency and productivity, increasing the supply of affordable homes, and investing in the infrastructure and skills needed to support our Island’s long-term prosperity.
I believe Jersey’s success depends on maintaining a strong economy, good public services and a thriving community, while protecting the qualities that make our Island such a special place to live and work.
My political career
I was first elected to the States Assembly on 24 November 1999 as Deputy for St Saviour No. 2 and was sworn into office on 9 December that year. During my first term, I served on several States committees, including Industries, Etat Civil, Harbours and Airport, and as President of the Gambling Control Committee.
I was re-elected as Deputy for St Saviour No. 2 in November 2002, subsequently serving on the Economic Development Committee and as Vice-Chairman of the Harbours and Airport Committee, before standing down from the States in December 2005.
I returned to the States Assembly in October 2011, when I was elected as a Senator with an island-wide mandate. During this period, I served as Assistant Minister for Home Affairs and as a member of the Bailiff’s Consultative Panel.
Following my re-election as Senator in October 2014, I was appointed Minister for Economic Development, later becoming Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, a position I held until 2022.
My responsibilities included supporting Jersey’s business community, tourism and hospitality industries, cultural activities and sporting development. During this period, I also served as Assistant Minister for Education and as a member of the Emergencies Council and Regeneration Steering Group.
After being re-elected as Senator in May 2018, I continued as Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture and was appointed Deputy Chief Minister, serving in that role until 2022.
I was also a member of the Emergencies Council during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the Government faced significant public health, social and economic challenges.
Following changes to Jersey’s electoral system, I was elected Deputy for St Mary, St Ouen and St Peter in June 2022. During this term, I served on the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel, the Privileges and Procedures Committee and the Bailiff’s Consultative Panel.
On 30 January 2024, I was elected Chief Minister of Jersey, taking on responsibility for leading the Council of Ministers and coordinating the Government’s strategic priorities.
At the General Election on 7 June 2026, following the restoration of the island-wide Senatorial mandate, I was elected as a Senator for a further four-year term. On 30 June 2026, I was elected Chief Minister for a second term.
As Chief Minister, I chair the Council of Ministers, the States Employment Board and the Emergencies Council. I also represent Jersey in its engagement with the United Kingdom, the other Crown Dependencies and international partners.
My business and community involvement
Before entering politics, I developed a career in business, beginning with retail management and subsequently gaining experience in wholesale and retail, hospitality, leisure, online commerce and property.
I have also worked as a business consultant and company director. My business background has given me a practical understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing employers, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, which are such an important part of Jersey’s economy.
I am a former President of the Jersey Hospitality Association and have been closely involved with the Jersey Battle of Flowers for many years. I served on the Battle of Flowers Committee from 1987 to 2002 and subsequently held the positions of Chairman and President of the Association.
I remain an Honorary Life Member of the Battle of Flowers Association and a strong supporter of an event that brings together so many Islanders, volunteers and visitors in celebrating our community and cultural heritage.
I currently serve as Chair of Age Concern Jersey, a charity supporting older Islanders. This is a role I particularly value, and it has reinforced my appreciation of the important contribution made by charitable and voluntary organisations in supporting people and strengthening our communities.
My early life and education
I was born in St Helier and grew up in Jersey, attending St George’s Preparatory School, Les Quennevais School and Hautlieu School.
After leaving school, I moved to London, where I studied at the College for the Distributive Trades and undertook a retail management traineeship with Harrods between 1982 and 1985.
I returned to Jersey in 1985 to pursue my business career and have remained closely involved in the Island’s economic and community life ever since.
Outside politics
Family and community have always been important to me. I am married to Anne-Marie, and we have two grown-up children and three grandchildren. We live in St Ouen, where I enjoy spending time with family and walking our dog, Winston.
I have always enjoyed sport and keeping active, particularly running, cycling and swimming. Over the years, I have completed numerous marathons and triathlons, many of them in support of local charitable causes.
I also enjoy reading, particularly history, and have a lifelong interest in music. I have played drums and percussion since an early age and still enjoy playing whenever time allows.
Despite the demands of political life, I try to make time for the things that matter most to me: family, friends, our community and enjoying the Island we are fortunate to call home.
